One of the things I enjoy most with students is getting them out of the university for the day! We've made a couple of trips to BBC Scotland this year, where students have met everyone from Chick Young to the head of commissioning for BBC Scotland.
One of the people I always like them to talk to is John Beattie, who tells great stories of how he trained for broadcasting much like he trained to be a rugby player. Hour after hour, making sure he was better than the next guy - practising until he knew he wouldn't make a mistake when under pressure. Don't tell him, but he's really fascinating to listen to!
We're also very lucky in that great guest speakers agree to come down to Ayr and talk to our students in their natural habitat. Two of the best this year have been sportswriter Tom English and commentator David Begg. You can watch what they had to say below.

I know that growing up I didn't know ANYONE who worked in the media - and I think it is really important that students are introduced to those in positions of power regardless of their own background or connections. The BBC, I have to say, are great at this.
